CHRISTIAN DEVOTION

After being born again, a Christian now becomes a son of God. The one who is born again has his
human spirit recreated with the life of God. This life needs to be sustained by staying connected
with God and by feeding on His word. In our daily devotions, we are strengthened and encouraged
to be as God wants us to.
POINTS FOR DISCUSSION
1.  WHAT IS CHRISTIAN DEVOTION?
Christian devotion is an art of bringing out time to stay with God alone. Devotion involves praise
and worship, the study of God’s word, meditation and prayer. (Psalm 27:4-5).
2.  WHY SHOULD I HAVE DAILY DEVOTION?
• You should have daily devotion because God commanded it for our good (Proverbs 4: 20-23,
Joshua 1:8).
• Devotion is the key to getting closer to God.
• Christianity is a relationship and in every relationship, spending time together isrequired.
• It helps you grow to a mature believer.
• You get to hear God and and know what to do about stuff in your life.
3.  WHAT ARE THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE ARE NOT CONSISTENT IN DEVOTION?
• Daily activities like school.
• Not wakingup early.
• Pressing issues.
• Procrastination.
• Guilt
• Substituting church activities for personal devotion.
Some say there is no time. This is a lie; you only have time for what you create time for and what
you consider very important. All these are lies and tricks of the devil to keep you from doing the
very thing that will keep you growing spiritually. Realize that any time you spend with God is never
wasted. It is actually time well invested.
4.  WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DAILY DEVOTION (Isaiah 40: 28- 31, 2 Chron. 26: 5,
Psalm 91: 1-11)
• It nourishes and strengthens you spiritually (Isaiah 30: 15)
• It helps you to develop and know God’s word more
• It helps us to cultivate the fruit of the spirit and character.
• It helps you to access God’s wisdom for solving life’s problems.
5.  WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I DO NOT HAVE MY DAILY DEVOTION? (Josh.9: 14-20)
If you do not maintain constant (daily) devotion with God, you will be starving yourself of spiritual
food. The result will be:
• Poorspiritual growth.
• Weak prayer life.
• Loss of direction and focus.
• Lack of power to overcome sin and temptation.
• You wont know what God is saying because you are insensitiveto God (The Holy Spirit).
6.  HOW DO I DEVELOP A CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN DEVOTION?
Create time early in the morning to begin your day with God. Mark1: 35 Psalm 63: 1-2.
Find a conducive and quiet place. Mark 1:35, Matt. 6: 6
Make a commitment, draw up a plan and stick to your plan.
7.  WHAT ARE THE PROCEDURES IN CHRISTIAN DEVOTION?
• There is no set rule required in your Devotional time with God but it should basically consist of:
• Time for worship/praise. Psalm 100:1-4
• Time for Prayer. Mark 1:35
• Time for Bible study Matthew 4:4
• Time for meditation. (Psalm 1:1- 3, Josh.1: 8)
Tips
• Learn to go to bed early in order to rise early.
• Begin with praise/worship/thanksgiving.
• Pray in tongues a lot.
• Have a plan for the study the word of God.
• Take time to meditate on and write down the things the Holy Spirit says to you while you are
studying the word and while you are praying.
• Use this to plan and organize your day.
8.  HOW LONG SHOULD ANY DEVOTION TIME LAST?
It depends on the individual and his level of spiritual growth. However, the longer it is the better.
Though, the bible seems to suggest a minimum of one hour (Matt. 26: 40).
The time allocated to each aspect like prayer, worship, studying the word can vary from time to
time. For example, if the spirit of worship comes upon you strongly go ahead and worship. If
you have a strong urge to pray, take more time to pray. If you feel like studying the word before you
pray, go ahead there are no hard and fast rules here.
CONCLUSION
The life we have received from God is not an independent life. It depends on God for its sustenance.
Jesus says ‘I am the vine you are the branches. Just as the branch depends on the vine for
sustenance, that is how the Christian depends on Christ the true vine for his daily sustenance.
John15: 1-2.
